Dirty Pictures in Africa

Many years ago rainy days meant going into the darkroom, turning on Bach, and let the hours melt away under the warm glow of the safe light. Today it is raining. I'm dreaming of Africa, I've turned on my Bach, and I'm playing around with old pictures in Lightroom and Photoshop. Picasso said, "All art is play." I'm playing. Testing out the Lightroom 4 Beta and trying out different texture overlays on some animals I photographed on our trip. And the hours, they do still melt away. Jan Armor

Africa - the kids

Lots of negative publicity about Africa in the news today. Made me go to my Lightroom Library and revisit some images from out trip 3 years ago. These images from a visit to a school in Zimbabwe. Our tour group, Overseas Adventure Travel, supports this school and many others throughout Africa. This class was overcrowded, with very limited resources. Note the size of the pencil in the closeup of the notebook. Still, the kids seemed very glad to be there, bubbling with enthusiasm. A wonderful experience for all.

Bald Eagles teaching the kids how to hunt.

We watched an amazing scene unfold out on the lake Sunday morning. Two adult Bald Eagles and their two juveniles showed up on the edge of a patch of ice about 200 yards out. These images were taken with a 400mm lens but still had to cropped since the birds were so far away. Both parents demonstrated to the young ones how to snag Coots out of an opening in the ice. You can see coots in the talons if you look carefully. The poor Coots, too stupid to make a run for it, just swam back and forth, back and forth, while the hunting lesson continued for over two hours. Pardon the pun but they truly were "sitting ducks."I never did see one of the juveniles actually catch a coot, although they swooped over the flock many times. This images shows the two juveniles bickering over breakfast… Another amazing adventure on Indian Lake. We were walking some of the backstreets of Rome when we passed this shop window. I had just a few seconds before the worker moved away from the statue. It was a grab shot all the way, through dirty glass, but a keeper. The moral of the story: Be ready. I would have missed this if the camera was put away, and if I didn't have it set for street photography which is F/8, ISO 800, continuous shooting. Jan

Sea Wall, Narragansett

Surf was really up today and the boys were doing their thing right along the sea wall. I began with the usual stop action pictures, high ISO and fast shutter speed. Got some keepers but done that before. Things became way more interesting when the clouds closed in and it became dull and dreary. Now the light was just right for some motion studies. Pretty effects from surfer and spray. The overcast presented me with an exposure of about f/32, with a shutter speed of 1/10 sec or so at ISO 100. Many interesting images using this combination of settings. Shot my brains out. Many good ones. It was difficult to choose, and once again, I never could have done it without Lightroom.

One of the many things I love about photography is that I look more intensely when I have a camera in my hands. Did I know sea gulls bath? And one of the things I like about Lightroom is that I would never take the time to do a series like this, rather just open one or two up and tweak them in Photoshop. In my opinion a sequence is stronger, and more interesting and informational than just one shot, sometime not. Here, I think a series works.

The Indian Lake Eagles -- Chapter One

I've named them Edward, the beautiful male with the white crown and Eddie, the younger bird of unknown gender. Rumor has it their nest is over near URI. They seem to be visiting our lake more and more frequently, hunting the Coots that don't seem to be flying south this year. These "portraits" were shot right out our window as they perched high in our old Oak. These shot with 100-400mm lens, with some Photoshop to remove branches. The whole series has been tweak and organized in Lightroom. an amazing program, seriously, I couldn't live without it.

The Indian Lake Eagles -- Chapter Two

In mid November we first noticed them. Old Yankee neighbors said they had lived here 50 years and never saw Bald Eagles on the lake. At first they came just now and then. I was very fortunate to be ready with the camera one morning when Edward nabbed an unlucky Coot. What a sight! He was a good ways off, made several passes, hovering like Death over the flock of Coots. The poor little birds bunched up really tight together, wildly flapping their wings. Perhaps this is a schooling behavior for protection. Eventually a very unlucky bird separated from the flock and bingo, gone… These shots also with the 100-400 Canon, which is actually more like 500mm on the Canon 7D. These have been cropped considerably.

Another day, another Coot, this time right in front of our house. Had to shoot through the trees during this raid. Edward again, trapping one poor little bird who kept diving to escape. Ed waited patiently on on the fifth dive he dove too, up to his crest, and out of the water with his breakfast. Wow, what a sight!!!!

The Indian Lake Eagles -- Chapter Four

My neighbor called this morning, and in an excited voice she announced that Eddy was on the float trying to catch a Coot. However, his food supply is getting smarter now. The Coots hide under the float, or beneath our dock when our eagles come around. Eddy strolled back and forth hoping some sucker would made a run for it. No dice… Eventually he flew off and the Coots came out to play. If you look closely in these images you can just barely see the little white beaks of our gang of frightened Coots huddled in the dark. At one point a few actually ventured out to see if Eddy was still around… he was and they quickly swam back to safety. Always something happening on our lake!

Again, thank you Lightroom for making this possible. Such a convenient workflow. I know if I was just using Photoshop I would never have made this presentation. Stay tuned for Chapter Five… maybe tomorrow.

Not sure how I ever lived without Lightroom. .Reorganizing some of my photos in the Library, creating collections of birds and came across this one, thinking how our grandkids love to play "Angry Birds." Now these two feathered friends are really ticked off! Maybe this could work symbolically -- a photo of our Republican and Democrat legislators hard at work for us.

Variations on a theme

Here are five variations on this beauty on Saugatucket Rd. in Wakefield, RI. One image is hardly processed, one is B&W and three "Dirty Pictures," texture overlays blended over originals. This is a four season tree. I like it. It speaks to me. It has character. It probably has seen many changes, been through some tough winters. I hope I can return many times and photograph "The Saugatucket Tree" in all seasons, and at different times of day.

Senior portraits

I volunteer at the Senior Center in Wakefield, and on first Tuesdays of each month I convene a little photo group for interested (over 55) amateur photogs. The other day I did a very quick shoot for any folks who happened to be around the Center. Ended up with 20 plus willing subjects. This portrait is one of my favorites. I think it says a lot about this wonderful couple. I can only imagine their life journey, the joys and the sorrows they must have experienced together.

Incoming Tide, Narragansett Beach

Early AM, first light, Narragansett Beach. Balmy, quiet, perfect conditions. Low clouds on horizon partially blocking sun, allowing for fairly slow shutter speeds at ISO 100- f/22, some motion blurring as I had hoped. Lots of keepers, thank the photo goods for Lightroom or I would be overwhelmed by this set. Back again this PM for more of the same. Pleased with the shoot. A good way to start 2012!

Occupy Providence

Lightroom for Facebook

Kathy and I did a little walk about Providence yesterday. Shot 150+ images as we played tourist. Random… anything that caught my eye including a few Occupy Providence. When we got home I edited, rated, and processed them in Lightroom. What a program! I swear, every time I use Lightroom I am amazed at what I can do with it. For sure, it has changed my workflow and improved my photography. Here's the "3 star" shots I chose. (Ditched the one stars, saved the twos and wished for fives but found none.) Set images to some free music and created a very short movie (1 minute +) in Final Cut. Take a look!

My Lightroom class at Newport Art Museum begins on Feb 16th… discount for early registration. Please spread the word.

Dirty Pictures-- The Movie

The "Dirty" Pictures Movie
Here's a short (1 minute) video I put together in Final Cut that illustrates the power of blending layers, so called "Dirty Pictures." All of the visuals were done using Lightroom and Photoshop. The striking model is Eve. I love the way she projects and connects to the camera. Great shoot! The music is a creative commons track from ccMixter, a website where one can use high quality music tracks without the problem of copyright infringement as long as not used commercially. The vocal is Susan Joseph… great voice.

Once In A Blue Moon

When the cold weather sets in and I'm not teaching, it's time for some layer art in Photoshop. A sky from last January 15th, and an old black and white image from yesteryear, combined with a full moon from a few weeks ago. (May be able to use this in my class on "Transformational Texture Overlays" next March. A good example of stacking and blending.)

Another "Dirty Picture"

It's amazing what can be achieved by creating layers, and blending them artfully together. I probably should really call my upcoming Dirty Picture Workshop at the Newport Art Museum "The Layers Workshop" because by learning about Photoshop's layers one can create an infinite variety of effects by overlaying and blending textures, type, or other pictures. Here's one I did last night -- "Untitled 2" (Just couldn't think of a title.) I blended 5 layers together over some antique bottles I shot yesterday afternoon. The fall of the light

The fall of the light across Bristol Harbor, at just the right time, both hourly and seasonally, made this pretty little dory a nice photograph. I had shot the boat several times before but it all came together this one Sunday morning when the photo gods smiled down on me. Light, weather, time of day, wind, and flag were in concert as the dory swung on its anchor. Back home, in Adobe Lightroom, I edited the 15-20 images and processed the few I liked the best. Here's several from the shoot. Every time I use Lightroom, I wonder how I ever lived without it. *My next class on Lightroom begins on February 16th at the Newport Art Museum.

Death from above

I remarked to Kathy that the coots were still here on the lake, in spite of the chill. I'd have thought them flying south by now. They should have... About 2 minutes later who should appear but a beautiful eagle. He was not to be denied today, snatching up one little guy for breakfast. The coot had hoped to escape by diving deep but to no avail… the predator bird dove just as deep.

Un-lucky ducks

Today the light was good so I was able to capture some images of our resident Bald Eagle having his breakfast at the expense of a flock of (migratory) black ducks, exact species as yet to be determined. First the eagle stirs up the flock that is in a very tight group, a protective mechanism I guess. When the ducks separate the eagle zeros in on one tasty treat. Amazing scene!

We've watched this pair of magnificent birds harass, separate and eventually pluck several unfortunate ducks out of the lake each morning this week. Now we know where the term "sitting ducks" comes from. Quite a show!

I hope you are all doing well. I included you on this list because I know that many of you have an interest in Rhode Island's arboricultural and horticultural traditions. Whether you have one tree in your backyard or you consider the entire State as your forested playground, I would like to personally invite you to a presentation of which I will be a participant. Jan Armor, a well respected photographer who shares our passions for trees, and healthy urban living will be presenting some of his best work in an introduction to a broader discussion involving the varied approaches to preserving our older trees.

Kelby Fite, a researcher from the F.A. Bartlett Research Facilities will present new research concerning biochar, a new organic soil amendment that holds a great deal of promise in our efforts to protect our aging tree population.

Among Newport's signature features are the many exotic trees planted more than a century ago. But today many of these trees are declining and are in need of preservation. Bittersweet Remembrance

We all received a carnation when we left the Ice Cream Social, a remembrance, one last request from Victoria Wright. It was day filled with tears and laughter, stories flowed and the ice cream was good. She was a great lady, and I take comfort knowing that she will not soon be forgotten. Goodbye, Auntie.

tiny jewels

Here is a surprise picture of the day. My muse called me to an amazing display of tiny jewels suspended in our resident spider webs. The heavy mist over the lake created these beautiful works. Up early, checking out the scene in Narragansett. Big lazy waves rolled in with the fog, There was an air of expectation, but we all had jumped the gun. Too early, too anxious...

Cormorant #3

We might call this "Reflection" or "Bird On The Boulder" or some such. I'd rather call this "Amazing," not the title mind you, but the technology involved in producing this image. I shot my favorite Coirmorant just 8 minutes ago from my deck, and imported to Lightroom for crop and minor adjustments, then out to this email. I have memories not too long ago of packaging film up and sending the rolls off to the lab for processing and proofing, first step, then when they are returned, flipping through paper proofs, making piles, choosing the best, and off again to the lab for printing final picture. Best case, two weeks via mail, probably longer. Furthermore, here we are 2011 and many eyes will see this within hours of my clicking the shutter, not just mine and my staff back in 1995. Wow, things have changed, and I do call this "amazing."

Getting Stoned in Vermont

I was reflecting on The Todd-Lincoln visit. This Todd was the only surviving son of Abraham, and after graduating from Harvard he went on to become very wealthy. His home is pretty much the way he left it, and, yes, the hat above is the one Abe is famous for. But he lost most of his kids, and with his only surviving daughter now gone the line is at an end. Sad finish to an amazing family.
Many of the furnishing caught my eye, as did the spectacular garden and grounds. Some the rooms were quite dim, shot at ISO 800 and 1600. Added some grain in Lightroom, and many of the shoots are single image HDR a la Photomatrix. I've been once again playing with Final Cut and I have enough from this little self-imposed exercise to make some kind of a movie. Stay tuned...
